Fugitive Files: 1 Arrested, 1 At Large

By News 13

22-year-old Gary Joseph Pelletier, a dangerous driver facing multiple charges who once engaged police in a high-speed pursuit, was arrested on Monday night in Standish after being featured on a "Fugitive Files" segment.

After the segment aired, Pelletier, himself called the Fugitive Files tip-line, saying he wanted to turn himself in, but authorities say he wouldn't disclose his location.

Moments later, deputies got other tips that did pinpoint his location in Standish. When investigators got there, Pelletier refused to come out at first. However, eventually he did come out and was arrested without incident. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

In the meantime, 54-year-old Michael Shoemaker, who was also featured on the "Fugitive Files," is still at large.

Shoemaker was convicted of attempted murder for slashing a woman's throat. He served a decade behind bars and was released on probation, but has now disappeared. Investigators say they've had no contact with him since January.

Shoemaker is considered potentially armed and dangerous. He's heavy-set with gray hair, chain-smokes Marlboros from a box, drinks Pepsi, and walks in a distinctive way, with a rocking motion.

Anyone with information is urged not to approach him, but instead call the Cumberland County Sheriff's 24-hour tipline at 800-501-1111 extension 2208.

Authorities are asking people in the Lewiston-Auburn area to be especially vigilant about Shoemaker's whereabouts, as he has been known to have contacts with that area.

Poll

Do you think Portland's mayor should continue to be selected by the city council, or should voters get to choose their own mayor?

  • The system should stay the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Voters should get to decide. The city council has too much power as it is.
