Investigation Into West Virginia Mine Disaster Underway

By News 13

Federal investigators are in West Virginia today to try to figure out what caused the worst mine U.S. disaster in 40 years.

29 people were killed as a result of last week's blast at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Charleston, West Virginia.

Massey Energy, which owns the mine, has repeatedly been cited and fined for problems with the system that vents methane and other gases from building up where the miners work.

Poll

Do you think Portland's mayor should continue to be selected by the city council, or should voters get to choose their own mayor?

  • The system should stay the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Voters should get to decide. The city council has too much power as it is.
