More Maine Retailers Accept Food Stamps

Published : Thursday, 06 Aug 2009, 8:21 AM EDT

With the economy still struggling, more and more people are turning to food stamps for help, and more and more retailers in Maine are accepting them.

At Colucci's in Windham, owner Enola Jacobsky says she's started accepting electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards a few months ago. She says it not only helps her business, but her customers as well.

Colucci's joins many larger chain stores, like Target and CVS, that have also expanded their acceptance of EBT benefits.

In Maine, more than 27 million federal dollars were spent through the EBT program in June. That's up more than ten million over last year.
